Kidd, O’ Neal in debut losses

Recently traded all stars Shaquille O’ Neal and Jason Kidd lost their respective debut against the Lakers and the Hornets.

Kobe Bryant scored 41points to spoil O’ Neal’s debut as a Sun, 130-124 as the race to the Pacific Division title heats up with two months left to the playoffs.

Shaquille O’ Neal scored 15points and grabbed nine rebounds in 29minutes on his first game over several weeks. “I’m in better shape than I thought I was,” he said, “the adrenaline factor and just being out there with the guys.”

Paul had 31 points, 11 assists and a career-high nine steals, spoiling Jason Kidd’s debut with Dallas 104-93 victory over the Mavericks on Wednesday night.

Kidd had eight points, five assists, three steals and a game-high six turnovers.

“This is kind of like a mini-training camp. We just don’t have a lot of time. But at the same time, we need every practice and every game for everybody to get on the same page and everybody to get used to playing with Kidd,” Mavs headcoach Avery Johnson said.

The saga over Kidd has ended and Dallas now feels a trophy-richer than other teams.

Dallas acquired Kidd recently in exchange for Devin Harris, DeSagana Diop, Maurice Ager, Trenton Hassell, and Keith Van Horn. New Jersey also gets two first-round draft picks and $3 million.

New Jersey also added Malik Allen and Antoine Wright in the deal.

“It’s been the most amazing, interesting trade we’ve ever done… I’ve never seen anything like it, but all’s well that ends well. We got the right guys,” Mavs owner Mark Cuban said.

After being drafted back in 1995, Kidd played as a Maverick for 2 1/2 seasons and then was traded to Phoenix. By 2001, he found himself at the helm of New Jersey’s operation. And boy did he steered them wonderfully, finishing the season 52-30. He made good of a promise before the season that the Nets would win 50+ games plus two berths to the NBA Finals in 01-02 and 02-3 season.

Since then, it was all downhill for Kidd as New Jersey failed to surround him with players. They weren’t able to sustain changes around the league.

Dallas was willing to exchange their protege Harris for a more seasoned veteran in the mold of Kidd.

Jason Kidd is widely regarded as Mr.Triple Double. He’s a nine-time all star, five-time all NBA first team, and a nine-time all defensive team selection.

This is the third big trade involving a Western Conference power as teams prepare for the playoffs. Shaquille O’Neal was dealt from Miami to Phoenix and Pau Gasol went from Memphis to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jason Kidd will be playing at this years Olympics in Beijing China with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.

Meanwhile, the Spurs got Kurt Thomas from the Sonics in exchange of Brent Barry and Francisco Elson.
